Bed Bugs in Commercial Settings

When you think about bed bugs, it’s likely that you imagine them in residential settings like houses, apartments, and dorm rooms. While bed bugs are frequently located in these environments, they have also been known to infest many public, commercial places. Today, we’ll review a few common commercial locations that may commonly be invaded by bed bugs and what you can do to protect yourself against taking home one of these bothersome pests.

At Advanced K9 Bed Bug Seekers, we understand that dealing with a bed bug infestation is the last thing on your “to do” list. Common Commercial Locations

Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are not only found in residential locations. These troublesome pests can be located in any type of building, and even vehicles are not immune from infestations. Because bed bugs prefer to nest near or close to their food source, they are commonly found in commercial settings that are frequented by many guests, including nursing homes, hotels, and hospitals.

Assisted Living Facilities

Aside from the residents, there are a large number of people that frequent nursing homes and assisted living facilities. From the staff to visitors, the amount of people on these campuses can be high during the daytime hours. If you have a loved one who resides in a nursing home or an assisted living facility, it may be worth speaking with the site director to determine what, if any, bed bug prevention measures have been taken to ensure the facility doesn’t experience a widespread issue.

Hotels

Because of the many guests that stay at hotels and other hospitality facilities, these commercial locations are prime destinations for the hitchhiking bed bug. Whether you’re out of town on an extended vacation or staying in a hotel for another reason, it’s a good idea to perform an initial inspection of your hotel room before you unpack your bags. If you see any warning signs of bed bugs, you should immediately notify hotel management and ask to be moved to a different room.

Hospitals

When we visit a friend or a loved one in the hospital, or if we are a patient there ourselves, we like to think of medical facilities as places that are clean, sterile, and free of pests. Unfortunately, many hospitals fall prey to bed bug infestations, most likely due to the large number of staff, patients, and visitors that are in the facility each day. Often times, these pests fall off of the bed sheets as the linens are changed and moved to different parts of the building for laundering. Before you leave the hospital, it may be a good idea to thoroughly check your clothes and belongings to prevent bringing any unwanted visitors home with you.
