Where Do They Hide?
While bed bugs like to hide in a wide variety of locations, they are most likely to be concentrated in the bedroom and living area because that is where you (their food source) spend the most time. If you’re checking for bed bugs, be sure to look in the four most common hiding spots of these troublesome pests:
Mattresses and Box Springs
Bed bugs like to hide out in areas that are as close to their food as possible — they don’t like to have to go far for their meals. Because most people spend an average of six to eight hours in bed at night, bed bugs are usually predominantly located in the folds of mattresses and box springs. If you have noticed small, circular stains and smears on your sheets, this could be a warning sign of an active bed bug infestation.
Couches and Chairs
Many homeowners have chairs in their bedroom, and if they don’t, they most likely have some type of upholstered furniture in their living room. Aside from the bedroom, Americans also spend a lot of time in front of the television, and if your infestation is bad enough, bed bugs are likely to hang out in your main living areas, as well. In addition to finding them on your mattress and box spring, you may also find bed bugs in the cushion folds of your sofas and recliners.
Soft Goods
Bed bugs like any type of hiding spot that is not frequently disturbed, and it is especially convenient for them if these hiding spots are located near their food source. Because of this, they also frequently like to hide out in soft goods near your bed and upholstered furniture. Whether in the bedroom or the living room, spots like the pleats in lampshades and the folds in curtains provide the perfect cover for them.
Baseboards
If there is one place in your home that is hardly ever disturbed, it is the baseboards. While you might clean them every once in a while, there is no reason to pull them away from the wall unless you have some type of water damage or need your carpet replaced. The narrow space between the baseboard and the wall provides the perfect hiding spot for bed bugs, and they will frequently lay their eggs there, as well.
