Where to Look
While bed bugs can be found nearly anywhere, there are some locations throughout a home where they tend to nest and hide. Not all of these harborages are in visible locations, and may include:
-
Along the seams, edges, and piping on mattresses and box springs.
- Inside the folds of curtains and lampshades.
- In the seams of upholstered furniture including chairs, couches, and recliners.
- Within the joints of drawers in wood furniture.
- Behind loose wall coverings like wallpaper, tapestries, and pictures.
- Inside electrical outlet boxes.
If you have a bed bug infestation that’s in its early stages, you may not be able to see it with the naked eye. However, with an advanced infestation, you’re likely to spot these pests in these areas fairly easily.
When to Look
You might have the best luck locating bed bugs at night since this is when they are most active. However, they can also be located in the middle of the day since they will seek out food anytime they are hungry enough. If you see signs of shed casings, eggs and eggshells, and/or brown stains on sheets and mattresses, chances are you have an active infestation. If that is the case, it is advisable to contact a professional detection company like Advanced K9 Bed Bug Seekers before your bed bug infestation gets out of hand.
Optimal Harborage Conditions
In order for bed bugs to thrive, the temperature must be between 46 degrees Fahrenheit and 113 degrees Fahrenheit — any cooler or hotter and they’ll die. They prefer to feed on people, but have been known to also bite pets as well. Generally, they will not travel more than 20-30 feet from their harborage for feedings, so they are likely to nest in places close to where their hosts are still for long periods of time, such as beds and couches.
At Advanced K9 Bed Bug Seekers, our highly trained bed bug dog, Tracker, can detect active bed bug infestations within 90 percent accuracy. The result is a more accurate inspection than that with the naked eye alone. If you’re in the metro Denver area and curious about our services, please contact us at 720-251-2665 today!
